You will talk with them like any other CRPG. You can choose answer and question- your choice in NPC conversation matter. You will have different mission, rewards, and ending depend on it- the RPG system is as complex as any good CRPG game out there. You will choose to raise your class, skill, attributes for every character you have.- the RPG phase alone is great, comparable to any great CRPG like Pillar of Eternity and Baldur Gate- the BATTLE phase played mostly like MOBA games (DOTA, League of Legends)- Battle phase played like adventure phase mostly, but you can also build and control units and buildings, although you will mostly control your Party of heroes- your party of heroes can defeat hundreds of enemies alone ala Dynasty Warriors game, but if the battle is too tough, you can bring your army with you to help- variation for missions in Battle phase is superb, sometimes unpredictable, as you can change obejctives depend on your choice while on mission.- great story- great writing- good voice acting- most companions are memorable and have deep background story- enemies will drop random loot either in Adventure or Battle phase- the game is balanced enough. not to easy, not too hard- you will have a base- you can buy weapons, accesories, armors, items, unit upgrades, and building upgrades for the RTS phase- you will meet traders in many places that sold very varied of items. there are lots and lots of items. If you think you have them all, then a new different variety of items will show up- very beautiful graphic- great soundtrack- game is very polished, AAA quality- normal adventure RPG phase can reach 40 hours from start to finish, not counting the RTS phase- I don't have any interest with this game at first because of the number "three" in the title and I don't really like playing any previous spellforce games as they focus more on the RTS aspect. But this one is different, and playing previous games also is not needed as this game has its own world. The irony is I played this game because of sale.. I really enjoy that aspect of focusing on the RPG aspect of the game with out really having to focus on the RTS aspect to win your battles on the campaign game. As to focusing on both. It gets really crazy with how many keys your are hitting and how many things you feel like you have to keep track of. So if you are simple minded I don't think this game is for you. Then again there is a easy mode so maybe it can work for you.. Can't undersrand the recent(!) negatives reviews. I didn't encounter a single bug, loading times are good enough and it's exactly what you expect of a spellforce game. It's definitely not perfect (especially the camera or the small variety of races) but I had good fun in my 20h so far.. Well, I forced myself to play this game through to the end.All in all the story felt contrived, the party heroes were funky and had that "I'm deliberately designed to be thematic and half-baked", and worse the last few final battles require you to bring a specific party member. The gameplay was more or less frustrating and the RTS is dubious sometimes. This game hovers between 2 and 2.5 stars out of 5. It's worth a play through mainly because you can mod the game so easily. I made the undead summons permanent and made them summon hordes of zombies at the highest level.I give this game a weak play recommendation. If you don't have anything else, but you might end up finishing it despite not having fun anymore.. I'm only giving this game a recommendation because it was clearly a passion project, and filled a serious void I didn't know I had since the days of Balder's Gate. I'll keep this as succinct as I can, but it's worth mentioning a few things. Please note, I have quite a few hours in the game and I did beat it, including all optional quests. Here's the breakdown, with more details to follow:Pros- Graphics are excellent- Gear has a distinct look on characters though often replicated\/reskinned- Voice acting, in general, is extremely high quality- It's long. It's really, really long.- RTS & RPG is unique and engaging- Story is good - it's your typical protagonist\/antagonist scenario, but there are a handful of surprises- Customization is a nice touch and truly lets you manage your party- A lot of "auto-attack" skills if you're not a huge fan of micromanagement (I'm not)- A lot of manual skills if you're not a huge fan of automation (I am)Cons:- Bugs that get progressively worse as the game goes on- Bugs: Voice acting lines often do not match text- Bugs: Triggered events are janky at times- Bugs: Quest markers often disappear on huge maps, leaving you to wander around like an idiot- Bugs: Quests are occasionally vague, especially towards the end- Severe balance issues (details below)- RTS is a neat concept, but it's definitely my least "favorite" RTS game in recent years- Heroes are hilariously overpowered with a few simple decisions that make armies pointless- Guard towers are garbage - tower defense is tedious- Resource management is a bit of a waiting game, and a grind- Expansion is unnecessary in most cases- Auras are OP af- I got it on sale for 20 bucks, but it should always be 20 bucks, or 30 at mostOne of my biggest issues with this game were some of the bugs severely crippling the immersion and occasionally making me waste my f'ing time backtracking and blindly searching maps. The quest markers randomly vanishing were frustrating as hell. Some people will tell you to just reload the game, or re-enter the map (or both) but c'mon man. This game has been out for a while now, and quest markers are kind of important. The heroes are insanely OP. I built my party primarily with autoattacks and such because I personally do not like heavy micromanagement. I'll spoiler this part out because I don't want to give you the "formula to easy-mode" but here is what I ran with the entire time in short detail. Also, spoiler spoiler; it's hardly complicated. This isn't a massive party guide. You can figure out what I did in like, the first paragraph and build your party to essentially kill everything.MC, Isgrimm, Angar, and Uram. Sword and board with all 4 of them. Focused primarily on auto-attack skills and rarely, if ever, actually used focus-skills with the exception of whirlwind and a few AOEs when I got impatient (otherwise I'd still win, just slower). Ran auras, including attack, defense, crit, and regen. Easy as hell. I literally attack-moved on the map towards the objective and made a sandwich, came back to a victory screen.Thing is, I didn't build this for that purpose. I wanted to make 4 badass tanks with some passive healing and they turned into a god damn murder squad. Auras are crazy powerful, and the regen isn't some dull passive. Even strong enemies, elites, and bosses could barely put a dent in the regen speed. There are also creatures that can effectively block all of your skills, including your auras, but focus on them and you're good (they're few and far between). In the early game, you will not have Angar (he shows up around the last quarter of the game). Substitute with Rohen.Normally I wouldn't put any kind of "strategy guide" in a review, but I added that piece in spoiler tags because it's necessary to understand how incredibly easily I put together a party that made RTS essentially obsolete and pointless. That kind of sucked, since there was a lot of potential there. Although admittedly I did enjoy watching my death squad beat the game for me. Automation is kinda fun.Second to last, the ending was just blah. There's a ton of lore, documents (collectibles), optional dialog and backstories, but the ending was basically the equivalent of a CONGRATULATIONS. YOU WIN! screen you'd find in some old SNES game without a budget. The bugs got worse, the ending felt rushed as hell, and instead of watching this epic epilogue you get about 5 minutes with no real closure or sense of accomplishment. I felt really cheated. On a final note, something happens in the last 10 minutes of the game that I don't want to spoil, so I'll tag it and also trying to be vague (I doubt it'll ruin the experience for you). One of the characters, namely one of my favorites in my party, straight up f'ing DIES during the boss fight in a scripted segment. It's never, ever mentioned after you beat the boss. Nice. You can kind of see the game slowly decay, so to speak, and I can almost picture six empty Monster drinks on a devs desk at 2am as he cranks out the final chunk of code with a gun to his head. Deadlines were evident. Dev sprints were evident. This game starts polished and engaging then ends in a beta-mess that effectively makes the player realize they're not in the world of Eo, trying to save it, but sitting at their desk and play testing a beta they paid 50 bucks for. Apart from that, the game is well done and worth playing, but I wouldn't say at the current price point. Wait till it goes on sale, then definitely pick it up.. It's rough and full of cliche's, yet somehow manages to feel like the most fresh RPG I've played in ages. It's not as full featured as, say, Pillars of Eternity or Dragon Age on the RPG side, nor is it as refined an RTS as Age of Empires (or something more contemporary), but the merging of the two genres has rarely been done this well. The use of RTS scale (map sizes, army sizes, etc) makes the scope of your adventure seem all the more grand. Furthermore, it manages to make the game avoid the cop-out titles like the aforementioned Dragon Age tend to fall into, where a massive, Helms Deep style confrontation is teased, but never followed up on.An important detail to keep in mind about the RTS portion; while the actual unit functionality feels less developed than other titles, the economic management side of things is very, very different from the norm. It is more similar to games like Company of Heroes, in its sector-based resource control. A lot of your strategy is going to come down to figuring out which sectors you want to keep as production points, and which will be your forward bases. No easy task, and one that can seem overwhelming at first. However, once you get the hang of it in about two or three missions, it works out. The plot is surprisingly well done. It is cliche' in it's specific beats (mages vs. zealots sounds very familiar...), but the voice acting and -most- of the dialogue are spot on. Character motivations are likewise rarely perplexing, and make sense within the context of the world. Visually, this game is something special. Props to the devs for overhauling the series art direction and -not- going into the cheeky "thongs everywhere" approach of the previous titles, and instead opting for a grittier, more realistic look. This does wonders to, again, pull you into the adventure. One drawback about the visuals though; it can get hard to tell your buildings apart from environmental structures like houses and the like, especially on crowded maps. My biggest complaints with the game are to do with its UI and some aspects of the RPG system. It's not that the UI is bad or non-functional. It's more to do with how it feels like it needed some additional features. A way to identify which sectors have what buildings at a glance would be welcome, as right now it can be a little maddening to keep track of what zone is doing what. Sins of a Solar Empire managed to do this really well, so I can only hope that the devs take notes from that game. Camera control, likewise, can be extremely problematic in heavily forested maps, since it does not clip through objects obstructing your view. They desperately need to add this in a future expanse... Finally; the RPG system feels a little strange in its rules. Attribute stats do not feel equally important in some cases, and do not really work the way you would either expect or have seen handled in other titles. A last and not as major nitpick I had was that I wished some of the maps were a little more open, as fielding an army can become difficult in such constrained spaces. With all of that said, I would certainly recommend this game. It's one of the few good fantasy-RTS\/ RPG games out there today, and I personally feel like it does a better job combining the two genres than even heavyweights like Wacraft 3 and Warlords: Battlecry.. At $50 bucks, no. On sale, its worth it. The RPG portions are fun enough and outnumber the RTS maps and it does add a sense of scale to the conflict enveloping the continent. This is mostly an RPG game with instances of RTS. To me, the RTS become more annoying the further I progressed since as soon as you attack the enemy once, they just are hellbent on constantly swarming your base. Which is a pain when when you have to hold sectors in order to collect resources there, then wait on horse drawn carts to ferry materials to where ever you are building. The bigger your base, the more micromanaging it takes. Thankfully, the RTS levels are broken up with generally several maps\/quests where its played as an RPG game. Now, the RTS maps can be fun, just less so the further down the campaign you go. At which point, I just used my heroes to dive at the AI's primary base and kill their town center, which kills off them regardless if they hold other sectors.. Good old times. Tiara`s Blessing!
